In Chania prefecture there are many choices for daily excursions or near walks, like the city of Chania, which abstains hardly 14 km from the villas. There you can walk in splendid small roads of the old city of Chania with background the famous and beautiful Venetian harbour, with the innumerable tourist shops taverns and restaurants, as well as a lot of bars and cafeterias.

Visit the Venetian fortress of Firka, in which the naval museum of Chania is accommodated. Precisely opposite dominates the famous lighthouse in the entry of the old harbour. Little further is also the archaeological museum of Chania, which has important discoveries of the Minoan years and from the ancient Kydonia. Also a very beautiful and interesting place to visit is the Municipal Market of Chania.

Following the way for “Akrotiri” region, you can visit the graves of Venizelon with the magnificent view to the gulf of Chania. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the village Theriso where you will drive through a gorge of amazing beauty to get there. In this village the headquarters of Eleftherios Venizelos are found, which now have been changed in museum. There are a lot of taverns there with local and traditional flavours of Crete.

You will find very beautiful places where adults and children can have a lot of fun, like Limnoupoli with waterslides, the biggest water park in Greece, as well as enough “go kart” parks.

If you like riding, you will be satisfied with the two organised equestrian groups for young and adult riders, which organise excursions in the nature.

Platanias is also in the middle of a lot of destinations and it is very easy for you to be directed to the beauties of the island from here. The splendid Falassarna with the ancient harbour and the amazing big sandy beach, abstains hardly half an hour from the villa. Just about on the half of the way there, you enter Kasteli with its graphic port and fish taverns, as well as the main harbour of Kasteli which connects Western Crete with the island Kithira and Peloponnesus. From there you can take small boats that make daily excursions to splendid Balo with the magical landscape and Grampoysa with its castle. In the southern part of the prefecture is Palaiohora, a graphic fish village with a lot of taverns, bars and tourist shops. From there you can take the boat for the island Gaydos, which is the European continent’s outmost southern piece, and Elafonisi with the sandy beaches and gulfs with all the nuances of blue colour in the sea.

By car you can go to the famous area of Sfakia and enjoy the very tasty “sfakianes pites” and other splendid flavours in their taverns. A big municipal parking where you can leave your car exists there and you can take the boat in order to visit Loutro village, a village of unique beauty in which automobiles don’t exist, it has spotless waters and a lot of hotels if you would want to stay for a night. The boat also goes to the Saint Roymeli village an other small graphic village where leads also to the gorge of Samaria. By car again you can go up in the White Mountains, reaching the higher point, which is Omalos. There are a lot of taverns there, hotels and also “Xyloskalo” from where you can enter to the national gorge of Samaria. It’s a walk in the gorge, which is of unbelievable natural beauty and you will need comfortable shoes and socks, an empty bottle in order to fill water from the clean natural mountain sources and a snack, because the way down the gorge is many kilometres (about 16). However it’s worth crossing it because it is unique in the whole world.

The prefecture of Chania has two very beautiful lakes, which are natural shelters for many birds and animals. The one is roughly a quarter from Platanias and is the lake of “Agia”. There you can walk on the path which is by the lake and enjoy the view from the two cafeterias that you will find there.

The other is the lake of “Kourna” which is found roughly 45 minutes from Platanias and is on the way for Rethimno city. It is a beautiful big natural lake between the mountainous volumes of “White Mountains”. There you can swim or rent marine bicycle or canoe and explore the lake. Also many taverns and cafeterias are to be found there.

Naturally the beauties of our prefecture do not end here, however you will discover them according to the time of your holidays.
